Ming Thompson

WHO: MING THOMPSON
WHAT:
GENIUS FOOD BLOGGER
WHERE:
US
VISIT:
mingmakescupcakes.yolasite.com

FFF LOVES… her passion for baking and all things cake-licious.

EAT: La Zucca, Venice, Italy
This hidden gem, on a campo far from the tourist route, serves up delicate vegetarian dishes.
I recommend: pumpkin flan, carrots in yogurt sauce.

EAT: Ariya Niwas, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India
This is a bustling restaurant near the train station. At lunchtime, gigantic fixed meals of rice and vegetable curries are served on banana leaves.
I recommend: peas uttapam, paper dosa (always a visual treat, stretching three feet from one side to the other), and the mango lassi.

EAT: Neptune Oyster Bar, Boston, Massachusetts, USA
This tiny restaurant in Boston’s North End serves up simple and unpretentious New England classics.
I recommend: the hot lobster roll in butter on a grilled brioche bun (the best lobster roll in the world), fried whole belly clams with a chunky tartar sauce.

EAT: Hui Lau Shan (Healthy Dessert Restaurant), Hong Kong, China
This ubiquitous chain specializes in mango desserts.
I recommend: mango sorbet with mango chunks and mango sauce (yes, that’s a real dish).

EAT: Beard Papa’s, all around the world
This Japanese chain serves cream-filled pastries made on the spot. When done well, the texture is perfect.
I recommend: plain cream puffs with vanilla cream.

EAT: In-n-Out Burger, California, USA
This chain is American fast food at its best.
I recommend: cheeseburger animal style (with grilled onions and thousand island dressing), vanilla milkshake.

EAT: Chick-fil-A, USA
Their chicken, juicy, sweet, and bursting with flavor, is astounding.
I recommend: chicken nuggets with honey mustard dipping sauce.

EAT: Sally’s Apizza, New Haven, Connecticut, USA
New Haven claims to be the birthplace of American pizza, and of the many wonderful pizzerias in town (Pepe’s, Modern, Bar), I think this is the best.
I recommend: a red pie (sauce only), pepperoni and hot cherry peppers.

EAT: Hunan Wildfire, Changsha, Hunan, China
This restaurant near the Xiang River serves its best dishes in bowls bearing a Hunanese quotation: He who eats spicy food can become a revolutionary.
I recommend: wild mountain pepper chicken, fish head noodles, sizzing Mongolian beef.

EAT: Cuz’s Uptown Barbeque, Pounding Mill, Virginia, USA
This is my parents’ restaurant, but I honestly think it’s the best restaurant in the world. The building is a folk-art masterpiece, and the food is out of this world.
I recommend: cheese egg rolls, deep fried lobster on rare roast beef, warm wild mushroom salad with balsamic vinaigrette dressing, and broccoli and cheese beignets.

About Isabelle Bellis
US Vogue recently proclamed her the beauty insider’s secret.  Facialist to makup artists Tom Pecheux, Gucci Westman and photographer Steven Meisel, French-born Isabelle Bellis has a passion for wellness and a deep understanding of the complexity of the skin. She was trained in France, Switzerland and Germany and has acquired the best treatment techniques with world-renowned skin biologists and naturopaths.

Bellis was trained by Joelle Ciocco, a world-renowned biochemist with 35 years of experience in the field of personalized skin care and taught her the Epidermologue Method ® that is based on a scientific analysis of the skin which is premised on the fact that everyone’s skin has its own genetic history, life and oxidative stresses.

To further develop her understanding of skin and its relation to other internal/external factors, Bellis studied vitamins, olio-elements and holistic nutrition in Canada and the new approach of nutrition at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York City, presided over by Joshua Rosenthal.

Inspired by the teachings of esteemed speakers such as Michio Kushi, David Wolfe, Eric Schlosser and Dr Andrew Weil, Bellis became a health counselor certified by Columbia University, integrating her learning on outer beauty with the inner workings of the body, cultivating the connection between internal nourishment and its influence on the external layers of the skin.

This is the important knowledge that she shares with her clients.

About Pam and Lydia (in their own words):
Our way of working is inseparable from our design ethos. We work in partnership through all passages of our process: planning, designing, finishing, traveling and selling. Personal connections are at the heart of our process and are essential to the way we work. We know our customers, our buyers and our storeowners. We find ourselves often designing for people we know and admire. Equally essential to our working method is our approach to fabric. We have then work in Australia on the actual production of garments. In practical terms, we design three ranges a year: Spring/Summer, Cruise and Autumn/Winter.

Our interests are specific and eclectic we design for people who are drawn to similar ways of thinking. We design for who are drawn to similar ways of thinking. We design for women who are quite possibly interested in art as much as fashion, who are interested in details and in visual plays. We want women to take our garments and make them their own. We don’t stand away from trends but we interpret these trends a little differently, a little idiosyncratically, a little privately based on our own interests. The sensuality of fabric against skin is important to us. We mainly use natural fibres, we are attentive to how the textures feel, how the seams are finished, how the fasteners might be touched. We believe in intimate attention to all aspects of the making process.

I love to shop for decorator items in LA, always inspired by the stores displays and merchandising.

RELAX: Bali has the most exotic resort hotels in the world. From time to time I book into a a spa retreat on the island — just for a change of scene and a bit of TLC.

SHOP: I shop online for books.

RELAX: I have great memories of party-ing it up all over the map through the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, but these days, give me a comfy rattan chair in my garden, a page turner with my designer dawgs under foot and it feels like Christmas. There’s no place like home!

About Stuart Membery:
Stuart Membery is one of the world’s celebrated designers. His work spans architecture, interior, fashion, fine art and product design.

The Stuart’s progression from fashion to interior and finally architecture is all but unique. There have been many architects that have gravitated towards fashion but few who have convincingly moved in the opposite direction.

For Membery, branching out into furniture was a natural progression from his internationally successful Bed and Bath Collections.

The STUART MEMBERY HOME COLLECTION comprises of furniture, accessories, floor coverings and Lighting and the soon to be launched Membery brand extensions of textiles and top of table.

Membery mostly works with mahogany and rattan and his signature style echo the atmosphere of bygone eras. Colonial and plantation are popular themes that run through the STUART MEMBERY HOME COLLECTION.

Celebrating the beauty of traditional style while breaking some of its rules, you can take a page out of Membery’s book, and add your own sense of relaxed whimsy to create spaces that are versatile, original and truly livable. It’s all about blending a classic sensibility with a dose of irreverence and a dollop of humor to achieve an interior that is tasteful, eclectic and always welcoming.

Born in Perth WA Stuart now lives in Bali with his family.

Jordan Christy

WHO: JORDAN CHRISTY
WHAT:
MUSIC PUBLICIST AND AUTHOR OF “HOW TO BE A HEPBURN IN A HILTON WORLD”
WHERE:
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE
VISIT:
www.jordanchristy.com

FFF loves… Jordan’s witty and fabulous guide on how to stay classic, gorgeous and graceful. She is the Poster Girl for her own advice!

STAY: Boutique Hotels — I love the charm, service and uniqueness of them, and almost always prefer them to a big chain hotel.

EAT: Il Cielo - a fabulous Italian restaurant in Beverly Hills, CA. The roof opens so you can dine under the stars. So romantic!

VISIT: Libraries - I’m obsessed with them. Whenever I arrive at a new place, I head straight for the city’s public library. Many times, they have incredible art and architecture — plus, all those great books!

EAT: Babycakes NYC — the world-famous gluten-free bakery in New York City. I can’t leave the city without making a pit stop for their chocolate chip cookie sandwiches.

SHOP: Ivey — a great, upscale clothing boutique in Franklin, TN — just minutes from where I live. They carry really cute Nicole Miller dresses, which are almost always my go-to outfit for an event.

DRINK: Caribou Coffee — this coffee chain is usually only found in the North, but it’s so good! I will literally drive dozens of miles out of the way for their decaf Turtle Mocha. Plus, they give you little chocolate-covered coffee beans as a treat!

SHOP: Fred Segal — the multi-level shopping hotspot in LA… sigh… I could spend hours and many, many dollars in there.

EAT: SATCO - this hole-in-the-wall Tex-Mex eatery in Nashville is a staple for me. Their chips and queso are stellar, plus they blast 70’s rock on the patio all day long.

SHOP: United Colors of Benetton Baby — it’s kind of hard to find trendy clothes for my baby girl, so I always get excited to find the rare Benetton Baby store.

SHOP: Boston bookstores — I love any kind of setting that has to do with learning or academia, and the Harvard bookstores around Cambridge, MA are just about as cute as they come: Rodney’s Bookstore, Globe Corner, Curious George Books & Toys, etc.

She has also written for local and national fashion magazines and music trade publications. She currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband Drew and their baby girl Paisley.

About How to be a Hepburn in a Hilton World:
In a society driven by celebutante news and myspace profiles, women of class, style and charm are hard to come by. The Audrey and Katharines of the world continue to lose their lustre as thongs, rehab and outrageous behaviour burn up the daily headlines. But, despite appearances, guys still want a girl they can take home to their mother, employers still like to see a tailored suit and peers still respect classy conduct. So is it possible to maintain old fashioned virtues in a modern world without looking like a starchy Amish grandma? Christy shows women how in this guide to glamorous style, professional success and true love…the classy way.  Full of fun assignments, notable names and real-life examples, Christy offers a new look at seemingly ‘old fashioned’ advice. She covers diet, speech, work ethic, friends, relationships, manners, makeup and fashionable yet modest clothing, showing modern ladies how they can be beautiful, intelligent and fun while retaining values and morals.

Informed by his grounding in printmaking and sculpture, Freeman’s eponymous label explores urbane elegance for modern women who are enamored by the past, but lust after the future.

Since beginning his odyssey from fine artist to fashion designer late last century, Freeman’s professional experiences have taken him from the Diemen Isle to the Bronx and back again.

It is this bricolage of experiences that planted the seeds of his fascination and seemingly inevitable decision to push all other interests aside to marry himself, irrevocably, to the continuation and indeed innovation of contemporary fashion.

Karen Walker

WHO: KAREN WALKER
WHAT: FASHION DESIGNER
WHERE: NEW ZEALAND
VISIT:
www.karenwalker.com

FFF LOVES… her cool and quirky aesthetic, mixing textures, patterns and colours with deft style and consumate ease.

STAY: THE CLASKA HOTEL, TOKYO – my favourite hotel in the world, the Claska is Tokyo’s only boutique hotel – hard to believe I know. The rooms are gorgeously designed and the café is the best place in for breakfast anywhere in Tokyo. Also, the beds are enormous which is hard to find in this town.

EAT: AFTERNOON TEA AT CLARIDGES, LONDON – for me, no trip to London is complete without afternoon tea at Claridges. Set aside a couple of hours and sit back and be pampered. Reservations essential.

EAT: THE SMILE, NEW YORK – the long time favourite for New York’s hipsters, smile is an effortlessly cool little hangout that’s good any time of day or night.

EAT: COOKIE, MELBOURNE – Cookie has been a favourite with the grooviest Melbournians for years. Any night of the week it’s a sensational spot – cool and effortless interior, great vibe, sensational food. Tucked away up some stairs in a slightly rundown old building in the centre of town, have dinner and then a movie at the roof top cinema upstairs and follow it up with a  drink in the bar … if you can squeeze in amongst the crowds that is.

VISIT/EAT: NEUE GALERIE, NEW YORK – Hidden away in a stunning townhouse, the collection is of early 20th century German and Austrian art and objects d’art. Best of all is the Café Sabarsky on the ground floor which  serves traditional German food and overlooks the park – a  must stop place for lunch when up town.

EAT: AFTERNOON TEA AT SKETCH, LONDON – the best places to take tea are normally establishment but the parlour at the relatively new Sketch in London’s West End is a rare exception that combines the old school charm of the leisurely taking of tea with new school looks. The tea selection at the parlour is great but it’s the cakes that make it superb, plus there’s something about the peachy light and the floral scent in the air that all come together to make the parlour a perfect spot for tea. If you’re going on the weekend make sure you make a reservation.

STAY: HOTEL DE SERS, PARIS – very chic, very well designed and a perfect location. Hotel de Sers can’t be beat. And the breakfasts are wonderful too!

EAT: THE IVY, LONDON – sure it’s a scene, but it’s a charming scene. The cosiness and club feel of The Ivy is what makes it so special. Whenever I’m there I feel like I’m in another time. The food’s great of course, you don’t get to be a classic like this without good food. The friends who I’ve always been to the Ivy with always let me have the seat facing the rstaurant – they know that what people come to the Ivy for is more than the great food and vibe – it’s the star spotting – and it’ll never let you down on that score.

STAY: THE LYALL, MELBOURNE – out in the suburbs (the posh suburbs that is) you’ll find this little delight – a boutique hotel at its best with a great spa and sensational breakfasts. Lots of good little cafes and restaurants nearby and reasonably close to everything else Melbourne has to offer. The general look of the place is well considered and the whole vibe comfortable and chic.

EAT: FREEMAN’S, NEW YORK – tucked away down a little alleyway, this gem glows with fairy lights on the outside and inside its series of woody, homely rooms overflowing with wild flowers and taxidermy make it one of the best little secret spots in New York and the food’s just as homely and cosy as the interior.

About Kirsten Carriol:
Kirsten Carriol has spent 10 years owning and running her own PR Agency specialising in all things beauty, cosmetics, hair care and other gorgeous, lifestyle products. Kirsten has also consulted on colour ranges for beauty companies.

Kirsten used lanolin as a little girl when her Father, a Professor of Molecular Biology & Genetics insisted that it was simply the best moisturiser a skin could get. Couple this with many farm holidays at her Grandparents property where she spent hours in the sheep shearing sheds, lanolin became an integral part of her childhood. As time passed on she discovered lip glaces, lip glosses and lipsticks, but never really found anything that lived up to lanolin.

Six years ago on her way to the airport in Paris she was contemplating the long flight ahead and lack of products good enough for the drying on-air climate. It was then that she decided to bring lanolin back to the world and Lanolips™ was born. A labour of love ever since, Kirsten has finally created her dream product… merging glamour, nature, no-nonsense and simplicity.

Kirsten is truly addicted to the perfection of lanolin and wants everyone to rediscover this magical ingredient.
